About the book >.>.> Throughout his life and especially the latter end of it – John Nash always hoped that someone would make a book of his drawings and paintings. In the 1920s The Fleuron had published a tiny book about his work with an introductory brief essay by his friend Sidney Schiff. Sir John Rothenstein for many years intended to write about his work; but unfortunately this project was delayed until well after John Nash died in 1977. However a year after John Nash’s death his friend and literary executor John Lewis compiled an excellent account of John Nash’s illustrative work in ‘John Nash: the painter as illustrator’ distinguished by its judicious selection of material and the care and beauty of its presentation. This was followed by Jeremy Greenwood’s thorough and masterly account of John Nash’s wood-engravings and lithographs. Clare Colvin’s catalogue for The Minories Exhibition in 1985 completed the work on the book illustrations with scholarly and sensitive insight. And Sir John Rothenstein brought out his biography of the painter in 1983 six years after the painter’s death. The present work seeks to complement the work of the foregoing writers in that it concentrates wholly on John Nash’s oil paintings and drawings in watercolours pencil and ink. The selection is as representative as it was possible to make it. Many of the items in this selection have never been reproduced before. It is hoped that they will not only give pleasure to those who are already admirers of John Nash’s achievement but that in addition they will afford an interesting introduction to those not already familiar with his work.
