About the book >.>.> At the Cakes & Ale Press HQ -a shed in our Shirley garden. Actually the press itself is a movable feast and often functions from the printroom in the downtown School of Art and Design where I try my best to do a ‘proper job. My many clients have included the New York Times Penguin Books and the St Kilda Courier. Monies from these odd jobs led me to buy a second home in Darktown. Not the main street you understand but just off it on rue Zigzag. That’s where I first met Emmett. who had recently relocated from Smithville. He began buying my work then I started giving it to him too. So all this stuff is a guide a compass-less map to the heart of a grumpy Scot who likes fine wines and Tricker’s shoes Open this book at any page and you’ll see a self- contained fragment: a pin-up girl (I’m married to one) a jazz artiste a tattooed sailor (don’t ask). But whatever page you see first it all comes from the same place with the same sentiment with the same nosiness that made me look again read listen thrice and put my brush to blank bit of paper or board. The urges came from an inner Darktown long before I started going there. (MP)
