His captivation with Europe’s past cultures accessible only through the imagination is emblematic of the curiosity that permeates his work. Through the act of collecting Cornell explored every corner of culture and knowledge pioneering a cross-disciplinary approach to art. Joseph Cornell: Wanderlust’ has been realised through a collaborative partnership between the Royal Academy of Arts London and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna two venues that provide a unique context in which to present the works of an artist who in many ways constructed his own idiosyncratic ‘academy or “muscum. Founded by artists in 1768 the RA shares a site with Britain’s Learned Societies which form a veritable map of Cornell’s interests from astronomy to natural history. The Kunsthistorisches Museum’s imperial collections hold works by many of Cornell’s most esteemed artists – including D?rer. Vel?zquez and Vermeer – while the objects in its Kunstkammer resonate in both form and spirit with Cornell’s own creations. (MP)
