About the book >.>.> Professor Martin re-assesses Kant’s critical philosophy in the light of recent developments especially those in on-tology and in the fundamental theory of mathematics and science. The reader will find Kant’s theory of space and time very clearly re-stated and criticised in modern terms. There is an import-ant discussion of the Antinomies dis-playing their traditional background and their connections with recent mathe-matical logic. The familiar thesis that Kant stated the presuppositions of New-tonian science is treated in consider-able detail. The author draws all these problems together in an illuminating account of the ancient medieval Leibnizian and finally Kantian theories of how the mind unifies its knowledge. The ontological discussion in Part II is centred on the duality of phenomena and noumena. The author carefully establishes the status in respect of this duality of space and time appearances God the acting and thinking subjects and the different kinds of things in themselves. In the course of the argu-ment he shows how the critical and practical doctrines of the first and second Critiques can be successfully harmonised. (LL)
