About the book >.>.> Although lacking the importance of Kant’s original project the labor required to understand and evaluate its results has been recognized and duly noted by generations of commentators. In this work I propose to add my endeavor to theirs all of whom including myself have undoubtedly shared Kant’s hope that their efforts will not go unrewarded. The approach will be both analytical and historical. While the main goal is to provide a critical analysis and evaluation of the Transcendental Deduction as it is found in the first and second editions of the Critique I share with many commentators the view that Kant’s argument can best be understood in light of the internal devel-opment of his thought which eventually led him both to the recognition of the need for a transcendental deduction and to the forms that it took in the first two editions of the Critique. In short I believe that in order to understand Kant’s novel project it is necessary to traverse the path through which he arrived at his understanding of the problematic to which it is addressed and his method of addressing it. An analysis of this path is the concern of the first three chapters and of an appendix to Chapter 3 which discusses the relation between Kant’s views and those of Tetens. These chapters trace the development of Kant’s thought from the 1760s through the end of the so-called “Silent Decade” (the period from 1770-1781) insofar as it bears on the eventual project of a transcendental deduction. Because of the focus on texts that have a significant bearing on the future not yet envisioned deduction there is no attempt to provide anything like a complete survey of Kant’s “pre-critical” thought which is quite wide ranging.
