About the book >.>.> Portions were removed in 1841-2: north and south nisles were added in 1194 traditionally by -Bishop Hugh of Lincoln: the south or Lady chapel which has the remains of an ancient crypt beneath it (restored in 1915) is Decorated (1320) and was added to the original church in the reign of Edward II. as a chapel for the Carmelite Friars who by a grant of that king occupied Beaumont Palace until 1541: the north aisle refitted by Devorgilla wife of John Balliol about 1280 and dedicated to St. Catherine was rebuilt [in 1842 by Sir George G. Scott R.A. and his partner Mr. Moffat as part of the Memorial to the Martyrs of Queen Mary’s reign and is known as the “Martyrs Aisle;” in this aisle is pre- served the door of the cell in the Bocardo prison where Craumer Ridley Land Latimer were incarcerated prior to their martyrdom: the south aisle had a chapel at its east end dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury of which only a piscina (1417) remains: there are several stained windows two of which were inserted in 1834: the stained east window placed in 1894 represents scenes in the life of St. Mary Magdalen; the west window under the tower was 6lled during 1897 with painted glass illus- trating the history of the Church and the City and Diocese of Oxford; another win. dow in the south chapel has seven medallions of Dutch glass.
