About the book >.>.> There’s an old western on the TV. Wagon wheels are moving forward at speed but their spokes appear to be spinning anti-clockwise. The appearance of forward rushing momentum has magically generated the illusion of its opposite. At any given moment. half of the wheel’s circumference (from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock) is moving forward in relation to the hub the other half backward. The movement of the spokes seems to exactly mirror this but whereas the circular movement of the Circumference is seamless and unbroken the sequential fragmented rotation of the spokes causes them to flicker. Meanwhile the hub itself traces an arrowing norizontal trajectory. These different movements are contradictory yet they all merge in the same fluent progress of the wagon across the screen. Such is our absorption in the wagon ‘s forward rush we overlook these niggling details. (LL)
