About the book >.>.> I am offering this publication as a guide and reference book for those inter-ested in instruments of the violin family and their makers. Though there are many such books available most of the authoritative works are either antiquated or written in a foreign language and there seems to be very little American literature on this subject. In view of the fact that in the course of the last century instruments of most European makers have been brought to this country it seems to me that this is an opportune time to publish a book stressing the value of these instruments on the American market. I have given a short outline of the life and work of the more important makers. Many European makers who have only achieved local fame but are scarcely known in this country are not listed while others whose names are popular in America are treated in more detail. An entire section of this book is devoted to modern American craftsmen. Their number is steadily increasing and I think it is important that they become more widely known to the American public. The biographical notes given herein come direct from these various makers and the prices quoted are the ones they themselves have placed on their works. The valuation of the old makers as I have given it and the description of their work refer to genuine examples and such instruments have been sold for the prices listed. (LL)
