About the book >.>.> Shortly after my book Labrador Diary: 1915-1925/The Gordon Journals was pub- lished in 2003 I received a telephone call from Lloyd Rowsell of Leading Tickles Newfoundland. He first congratulated me for what he described as a “good book.” There was a more important reason for his call. “You make mention of my father in your book” he told me. I remembered well the Rowsell name and a par- ticularly humorous incident that the Rev. Henry Gordon described in his journal. Gordon Incumbent of the Sandwich Bay Mission with headquarters at Cartwright had been called upon during the winter of 1916 to make a pastoral visit to the adjacent Mission of Battle Harbour. On February 1st he arrived at Caplin Bay and discovered to his delight that a Leander Rowsell had recently taken up residence in the community as a teacher. Gordon noted in his journal “He was rather a remarkable installation in the little tilt (hut) where he was staying-being well over 6 foot 2 inches and broad in proportion. The man of the house had to knock out the bedroom partition to allow this giant’s legs to get straightened out.
