About the book >.>.> The staggeringly talented and versatile designer Ren? Lalique developed a suc- cessful career as an Art Nouveau jeweler before moving on to become a master of glassworking in the high Art Deco style. Initially trained as a goldsmith Lalique worked for over 20 years as a designer and manufacturer of jewelry with commis- sions from such well-known firms as Boucheron and Cartier. His use of rich and rare materials and the exquisitely artificial naturalism of his designs was very influential. Lalique first began to use glass in jewelry as early as 1890 and by the early 1900s he had extended his range to mirrors tex- tiles and paper-knives. In 1908 he was commissioned by Coty to design a range of scent bottles and from then on he con- centrated exclusively on glass. He took over a glass workshop and developed revo- lutionary techniques for mass-producing high-quality glassware. (MP)
