About the book >.>.> In Daegu local artists early embraced Westerns-style painting alongside Seoul and Pyongyang. In 1920 Lee Sang-jeong who studied in Tokyo returned to Daegu and embarked on his artistic career. In 1915 only five years ago Go Hui-dong the first Korean painter who adopted Western styles came back to Korea from Tokyo after studying art. Since then artist groups such as Yeonggwahoeand Hyangtohoe were founded and actively worked in local society forming discourse and playing a leading role in modern Korean art. Daegu is also where art theorists like Kim Yong-jun dedicated to Korean art with keen criticism and artists like Lee In-seong representing an age was nurtured. Through the Modern Daegu Art Exhi- bition Daegu Museum of Art offers an opportunity to study modern local art and local artworks which played a lead role in Korean art. Gallery 4 and 5 are specially arranged spaces for examining art history based on local art shedding light on local artist activities and the art historical meaning of their work. Following the Jeong Jeum-sik and Kim Jong-bok exhibi- tion the Lee Qoede exhibition is the last show of 2011. Born in Chilgok Gyeongbuk Province Lee worked with a mystic classical beauty modern sensibility unique conceptions insight into and vision of the times in his own distinctive style. The consistent subject of his work was the figure. His figure painting shows a high level of expression with outstanding sketching representing the subject’s psychology and spirit. He is also an artist symbolic of the division of the Korean penin- sular with works appearing after the lifting of a ban on artists who defected to North Korea. (LL)
