About the book >.>.> The drawings which embody the whole of Leonardo da Vinci’s research and deductions in the sphere of anatomy with their accompanying manuscript commentaries were com- piled towards the end of his life in three manuscripts representing some three hundred plates. Most of them are now in the royal collections at Windsor Castle. Under what conditions did the artist produce these anatomical draw- ings? He certainly consulted the literature of his day on the subject but did not find an answer to his concerns. He was obliged to start from the very beginning and think everything out anew. He did this at first through contacts with the anatomists of his day but also and more particularly by means of his own dissections. One cannot be sure exactly what human material he was able to use. It seems likely that in Milan he had available to him some heads of execut- ed convicts and limbs of injured persons.
