About the book >.>.> The creators of the Zentangle art form also had their own “Eureka!” moment. It began one day as Maria Thomas artist and calligrapher was working on an illuminated manuscript. Illumination is the ancient art of decorating books as practiced by monks in the Middle Ages. Illumination includes miniature paintings embellished with gold and/or silver leaf. But it also includes delicate designs cre- ated by hundreds of repetitive strokes-and this turned out to be the key to the magic. Maria was absorbed in drawing-stroke by stroke-repetitive patterns within the manuscript when Rick her beloved asked a question. It took some time for Maria to come out of her reverie and she noted that her focus had taken her far away from day-to-day cares and concerns about tasks that needed doing. Rick suddenly realized her experience was exactly how he would describe his own meditation sessions. And this became the seed of an idea. Rick and Maria wondered: What if we could re-create the freeing feeling Maria had through the kinds of basic strokes she was using to make patterns at that moment?
