About the book >.>.> SOON AFTER the second World War it became a joke among travelers that however many people you met in Germany none of them had ever had any connection-no not the remotest connection-with the Nazi party. France displayed the opposite side of the coin: how- ever many people you met it was impossible to find any who had not been “in the Resistance.” Latterly it has become fashionably cynical to swing to the other extreme and say that virtually nobody resisted; that the great mass of the population acquiesced in their. defeat and actively collaborated with their conquerors. This state- ment is probably less true than either of the others. But any defini- tion of truth must be empiric rather than categoric-and if the maneuvering of the Free French the wheeling and dealing between Churchill Roosevelt de Gaulle and Giraud seems complicated to the political historian the rivalries and animosities between resis- tants within metropolitan France were more complex still.
