About the book >.>.> This proved to be a more difficult task than at first may appear to be the case since throughout the close study of over 1000 issues of the newspaper it was necessary to maintain proper balance between all facets of Cornish contemporary life whilst at the same time including as much as possible of that mass of material which has hitherto gone unrecorded by historians. Had the significance of every detail in every item been explained in full the nature of the book would inevitably have been destroyed by the provision of lengthy foot- notes at the expense of the original extracts. To prevent its becoming yet another social history book of the more usual kind therefore explanations [in the text and at the end of entries] have been kept to a minimum. The extracts themselves together with their captions a few of which are also taken from the newspaper retain the original grammar punctuation and spelling however erratic since these irregularities are part of the character of the whole.
