Ulysses’ long homeward journey to a home which called him from across the seas of fear and sensual pleasure is symbolic of the kensei’s journey through the world of appearances. We use the term “kensei” to describe one who treads the path of total action in order to pass beyond the mundane borders of the condi- tioned past to enter an untravelled world whose margin begins only at the fine edge of Ulysses’ arch. To find the light of the kensei is to embark willingly upon an odyssey an extended journey of both challenge and wonder. It is a journey cut into the very richness of life hewn through images and echoes. A journey in which every traveler must both supply and sail upon the winds of their own vital interest. That interest can perhaps be stimu- lated but never supplied by another for interest supplied by another must soon wither and fade.
