About the book >.>.> In 1672 the English and French combined to attack the Nether lands by land and sea. By this time the English people had no wish for this kind of war and the naval part of the campaign was not particularly successful. England made a separate peace in 1674 though the land war between France and the Netherlands continued until 1678. The = Dutch succeeded in retaining their indepen dence but at great cost. After the power of France revived under Louis XIV they had to look continually at the possibility of an invasion by land and their days as a great sea power were over. Furthermore warships were increasing in size and Dutch harbours and coastal waters were too shallow to allow them to build bigger ships.
