About the book >.>.> There were so many anecdotes that I hope that I have done Percy justice by selecting those of greatest interest but I know that I have had to leave out some equally amusing or not so amusing incidents to those portrayed in these pages. At least I know that he can use some of those 1 omit in local newspapers as he has done in the past. There are few people who will be able to say that they have spent over 50 years working for the railways in future. It becomes clear as you progress through Percy’s railway life that those who work on the railways begin to be seen as a monetary statistic to be cut wherever possible rather than an individual serving a community’s social needs. The consequences of such a drastic downturn and lack of investment in the railways is evident for all to see on the decline of this country’s railways; whilst the S&D closure in hard headed accountants’ terms may have seemed the only logical conclusion the consequences today are gross pollution traffic jams and damaged roads. The age of the train which Percy lived through may yet return out of sheer economic necessity and there is news that we may also see a major part of the Bath extension of the S&D come to life again over the next decade after over 30 years closure. Sadly for the Branch any question of reopening looks to be out of the question; as I speed down the M5 and cross over that point where the trackbed to Bason Bridge and Highbridge ran does the word “progress” come to mind? Not really none of the large trading estate that now sits on the S&D Highbridge site is rail connected yet the rails are but a few yards away. Highbridge GWR station is but a shadow of its former self but at least it still exists.
