About the book >.>.> NOTORIOUSLY different groups within Anglicanism like to claim that they are the real heirs of the classical tradition established in the first century and a half of independent Anglican life. Those in the evangelical corner emphasize that the English Reformation was an affirmation of the absolute supremacy of scripture in all matters affecting the Church; some would-like their predecessors in the sixteenth century-add that the Reformation was therefore an unfinished process and that the purifying of the Church according to biblical principles must be taken further in each generation. Those from the catholic wing will stress the concern of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Anglicans to preserve the forms of ministry handed down from the earliest days of the Church and their sense of spiritual and sacramental continuity with the early Fathers and the faith of the ‘undivided Church’; quite often they will add that the feverish intensity of the period distorted the proper character and calling of the Anglican Church by allying it to various Protestant principles that were really extraneous to the central business of creating a reformed non-papal Catholicism based on a renewed sacramental life. Liberals point out the way in which early Anglicans had to live with diversity and never bound themselves too tightly to a single con- fessional formula focused on specific theological principles in contrast to the Reformed Churches of the continent of Europe; and they would probably add (like the evangelicals but with a different agenda) that the process of reformation continues and that the doctrinal formulae still taken for granted at the beginnings of Anglicanism are open for reinterpretation. They might also say that since Anglicanism has never taken the line that scripture alone is the source of true doctrine they have the advantage of being able to use the results of biblical criticism without anxiety and to move away from the literal injunctions of the Bible without feeling that the essence of their Christian identity has been betrayed.
