During the hectic mouth and little more he spent in the People’s Republic it is abrious that the responded most sympathetically to the intense variety of its atmosphere ranging between the monotonous northern plains to the fantastically shaped mountains of the remote south-west. First he flew from the skyscrapers of modern Hong Kong to the former capital of Peking whose very name like everything in China has undergone transforma- thons throughout the ages. It was called Cambalue when Marco Polo visited it in the thirteenth century. Now it has become Beijing?. No photographs render justice to the multi-coloured grandeur of its Forbidden City so long the adminis- trative centre of China’s mighty empire but Guarnieri has succeeded in evoking its extraordinary scale. The clearest view of its dazzling conglomeration is obtained from the so-called Coal Hill immediately on its north. Originally coal was stored here which was later heaped with earth from the same area. (MP)
