About the book >.>.> 1943 was the turning point for the Axis forces. Stalingrad fell on 2nd February and on 13th May 1943 the North African Campaign ended leading to as far as the Luftwaffe were concerned a war on three fronts with the Allied invasion of Sicily on 9th July. The Battle of the Atlantic also took a turn for the worse with 43 U-Boats being sunk in May with the Allied new and efficient submarine detection radar H2S proving its worth. The strength of the German Air Force should have begun to wain with a total of 3954 front line aircraft available in all theatres on the 30th December 1942. However there was a remarkable recovery in the first six months of 1943 brought about largely as a result of the increasing production of the Focke-Wulf FW190 which enabled the Luftwaffe not only to create new single engined fighter units but to expand existing ones and rejuvenate and strengthen the ground-attack force. Between January and June 1943 the single engined fighter force increased in strength by almost 600 aircraft and the ground attack force by 500 aircraft. By the end of the year the total front line strength of the German Air Force stood at 5582 aircraft an increase of 1628. This was quite a remarkable achievement for the German aircraft industry considering the losses incurred on all fronts including the Battle of Kursk during July 1943. (LL)
