About the book >.>.> We start this volume with the Blitz at its height and British cities being pounded on a virtually nightly basis but with the RAF night-fighter force beginning to make good use of its A.I. (Airborne Interception) equipped aircraft the night battle starts to turn in favour of the defenders. The aircraft of Bomber Command at this time are starting to have a serious effect on the German war effort with their deep incursions into Germany on a regular basis. The Luftwaffe responded by making greater use of its night-fighters especially intruder operations over RAF Bomber Command’s airfields to catch unwary crews returning from operations. On 22 June 1941 Operation Barbarossa the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union including the Soviet occupied part of Poland was put into action with about four million Axis troops being involved in the initial operation. The British and their allies were fully aware of the build-up of Axis forces in the east through the regular reading of the German Enigma encoded radio traffic. This had indicated that many Luftwaffe units were being pulled back from operations against Great Britain to be brought up to strength or re-equipped with more modern aircraft before being transferred to airfields along Germany’s eastern borders.
