About the book >.>.> Maija Isola is the designer of Unikko – Marimekko’s most celebrated print design. Maija created her first design in 1949 when Finland was rising up from the darkness of the Second World War. Maija took part in a textile print competition as a student and her design work caught the eye of Armi Ratia the founder of Marimekko who took Maija’s design into production. This fateful encounter with Armi allowed Maija’s talent to come into full bloom. Maija created more than 500 print designs for Marimekko over the span of 40 years. In her childhood Maija loved being around her dear animals and in the nature. The vivid imagination she and her sisters developed while playing games would be an invaluable treasure and a creative resource in her later life. For Maija freedom mattered more than anything else. Maija channeled the energy and love she experienced throughout her life into her work. The universal appeal of her work derives directly from her life. This book is a tribute to Maija Isola – the incredible boldness and character of her design. Special thanks to Kristina and Emma Isola for offering valuable textiles and materials related to Maija Isola during the making of this book. (LL)
