About the book >.>.> This book has been long in the making. I greatly appreciate the invitation to contribute to this series of Christian reflections on various fields of learning. Most of the volumes reflect many years of conversation be-tween a Christian scholar and those with other points of view within a particular academic discipline. In this book too there are many from outside the Christian community. It will be clear in the ensuing chapters how many conversation partners I have stretching back over many centuries. Here I want to acknowledge the friends and family colleagues and students who have greatly encouraged me in this enterprise and who have read significant parts of the manuscript at various stages.
