About the book >.>.> Lord Gort’s career as a soldier was by any standards extraordinary. During the first World War he won a V.C. three D.S.O.s and the M.C. In the 1930’s he rose in three years from brigadier to full general and head of the British Army at the age of 51. At the outbreak of war he was appointed commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force; and in May 1940 he took the decision against the expressed wishes of both the British War Cabinet and the French high command which saved his troops from destruction and changed the course of history. For if the greater part of our trained army had been lost Britain would have scarcely been able to refuse the offer of a com- promise peace leaving Hitler free to seize the Middle East and Africa and to con- centrate overwhelming forces against Russia. J.R. Colville who was one of the Private Secretaries at 10 Downing Street under first Neville Chamberlain and then Winston Churchill is particularly well qualified to tell the story behind this vital act of judgement. Not only does he follow Gort’s dynamic progress as a soldier-his record as a leader of men under fire his dialogue with Liddell Hart on tactics and his stormy relationship with Hore Belisha which finally ended the latter’s career as War Minister-but he provides a trenchant though unbiased account of the men of Munich who were Gort’s political masters.
