About the book >.>.> Edouard Manet is frequently represented as the pivotal figure in French nineteenth-century painting and has been celebrated as both the master of realism and the precursor of Impressionism. This extraordinary volume is an examination of Manet’s work and reputation through the writings of his contemporaries-his family and friends as well as professional writers and those of later commentators and critics. The text is lavishly illustrated with 119 color plates and 123 black-and- white reproductions of photographs documents prints and paintings by other artists. Born in 1832 Manet came from a comfortable upper-middle-class background. He studied under the academic painter Thomas Couture and although his work was perceived as modern and innovative by many of his contemporaries Manet always wanted his paintings to be shown in the Salons and to gain official recognition. However his Olympia aroused scandalized responses which helped to create the image of Manet as an artistic rebel. In subject-matter and technique his later paintings relate to those of the Impressionists and many of his last works such as the Bar at the Folies- Berg?re reveal a continuing concern with the representation of modernity and the depiction of modern urban life.
