About the book >.>.> Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim Finnish soldier and statesman casts a long shad- ow on the recent history of northern Europe. Born into a Swedish-Finnish family in 1867 in a Finland that was then a duchy of Russia he was trained and fought in the Czar’s army and rose to the generalcy during the First World War. He led victorious rightist forces that defeated the Red Guard in Finland’s 1918 civil war. In the 1930s he was called upon to head the Finnish defense council and then to command Finland’s army in the Winter War against the U.S.S.R. in 1939-1940. But one of Mannerheim’s most com- plex tasks presented itself in the last years of World War II when he extri- cated Finland from its alliance with Ger- many and war with Russia and helped it move toward a new period of peaceful relations with the U.S.S.R. Late in the war Mannerheim became president of Finland a post he held for two years. By the time of his death in 1951 Fin- land was well established on the remark- able course between East and West that it has followed ever since. Stig J?gerskiold related to Man- nerheim through grandparents who were brother and sister knew Marshal Man- nerheim personally and he writes with sympathy and admiration for Finland’s greatest hero. J?gerski?ld is a Swedish lawyer and historian who abridged his own eight-volume biography of Man- perheim for this edition. (SP)
