About the book >.>.> THIS book deals with the application of the principles of mechanics to some of the problems that arise in the design and use of road vehicles. The subject is one on which few books have been published. The mechanics of the engine have not been included because several books are already available on this branch of the subject. The book is intended for students who have done an elementary course of mechanics some mathematics (including trigonometry and elementary calculus) and who are going on to more advanced studies in these subjects. The arrangement of the book is therefore such that in the early chapters only the basic principles of mechanics and only simple algebra trigonometry and calculus are used while as the book proceeds a knowledge of more advanced mathematics is gradually required. An endeavour has been made to present the mathematics in an easily understandable form so as to help the reader who is not very strong in this subject. An introduction in which the principles of mechanics which the reader is expected to have studied previously are reviewed leads on to the first chapter which deals with the forces acting on vehicles at rest. Chapters 2 and 3 then consider the forces and moments arising from or producing linear and angular accelerations. The forces and torques acting in both ordinary and epicyclic gearboxes and their components are dealt with in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5 the mechanics of vibrations are developed and in Chapter 6 these are applied to vehicle suspension systems. The mechanics of the brakes used on road vehicles are a subject on which little has been published in a form easily available to students and so in Chapter 7 these principles are given at some length and in an easily understandable form. Chapter 8 deals with the mechanical properties of pneumatic tyres which enter into the question of the directional stability of vehicles which is the subject of Chapter 10 while Chapter 9 gives the development of the equations of motion which are also used in Chapter 10.
