About the book >.>.> For an untold number of years the Indians had known that the Medicine Lake Creek in southwest Nebraska was an ideal location for human habitation. Nicely timbered and offering protection from the harsh winds of winter the Medicine and its tributaries were preferred campsites and it was here that the various tribes of plains Indians especially the Lakota or Sioux established their winter hunting villages as late as the 1860s and 1870s. 4 Lying between the high plains or divides Cottonwood Canyon was an ancient thoroughfare from the Medicine Creek to the north opening into the broad expanse of the Platte River Valley. When the government recognized the need for a military fort in this section of the Nebraska Territory Fort Cottonwood later renamed Fort McPherson was built at the mouth of Cottonwood Canyon in an effort to break up this favored trail of the Indians.
