About the book >.>.> This volume is concerned with two excavations bordering Redcliff Street one of the principal streets of a suburb on the opposite bank of the Avon from the late Saxon burh and subsequent Norman castle of Bristol. The two sites lie on the eastern side of Redcliff Street separated by Thomas Lane. Development of the Redcliff and Temple Fees in the 12th century on the alluvium of the Avon floodplain resulted in the formation of an urban suburb that grew to rival in size the built-up area of Bristol itself. The potential of the archaeology in Redcliffe is well recognised with a number of excavations on the western side of Redcliff Street in the 1980s revealing spectacular preservation of medieval waterfront structures (Jones 1991 provides a summary of this evidence). By the turn of the 21st century redevelopment of former industrial premises in Redcliffe for offices and residential accommodation was in full swing and the integration of archaeology within the planning process led to opportunities for excavation and analysis. The financial crisis of 2007-8 caused a temporary hiatus in the pace of redevelopment but at the time of writing a number of schemes have been dusted off and are being actively promoted so doubtless opportunities for further investigation will occur before too long. Like many historic towns and cities in Britain the pace of excavation has not been matched by a commensurate level of analysis and publication. A number of important excavations both pre and post the formalisation of archacology within the planning process in 1990 remain unpublished. (MP)
