About the book >.>.> The Visual Culture of Wales is a major three-volume series which Te seeks to fill a serious gap in the literature of Wales. Based on research undertaken at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies the series examines Welsh imagery and the artists craftspeople and patrons who created it from the Celtic Chris period until c. 1960. The Visual Culture of Wales is the first series of its to treat the subject in a comprehensive way and to explore the developm of images and image-making in the broader context of the social econo and political development of the Welsh nation. The present volume considers the period extending from the collapse of Ronan government in the fifth century to the Renaissance of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The text demonstrates how bor economic forces and social political and religious ideas generated image through changing patterns of patronage and practice. The pictures and artefacts many of them reproduced for the first time reveal the startling richness of imagery surviving in Wales from the Middle Ages. While some workshops and craftspeople produced distinctive and occasionally idiosyncratic work Welsh visual culture was fully integrated into the mainstream of European Christendom. Indeed the volume reveals that Welsh patrons were at the forefront of avant-garde taste in the Northern Renaissance of the fifteenth century.
