About the book >.>.> Christmas Day 1985 was a normal working day in Bosnia-Herce- govina. The Yugoslav communist government does not acknowledge Christmas; so the school bus left Medjugorje as usual at 6.20 am taking the older pupils to their classes at Mostar an hour’s journey distant. Most of the Medjugorje boys and girls are Catholic but in Mostar they share their studies with Muslims and Orthodox. Back in the village though the primary school was open its desks were empty. By common consent all the small children remained at home. According to the Yugoslav constitution religion is free; but it must be private. The country we call Yugoslavia was set up on December 1 1918 as a nation of South Slavs that is of Croats Serbs and Slovenes. In its short history as a modern state it has been a constitutional monarchy a land invaded occupied and divided between Germany and Italy while torn at the same time by civil war. Now it is a federal people’s republic ruled by the League of Communists of Yugoslavia. (LL)
