About the book >.>.> Nineveh with their spectacular palaces temples. and fortifications; formulated the first codes of law: composed timeless poems like the Epic of Gilgamesh: and led the ancient world in mathematics astronomy. and other exact sciences Extensive networks of trade and diplomacy linked Mesopotamia to surrounding cultures and at times it fell victim to foreign conquest. More often than not however this led not to a cultural “reset” but to fruitful cross-fertilization. Even under six centuries of Persian Greek and again Persian rule (539 BC- ca. AD 100) Mesopotamian culture continued to flour- ish and had a significant influence on Greco-Roman intellectual life. The fascination with Mesopotamia that we see in Herodotus and the Old Testament has in fact never diminished and is shared by the many visitors to museums such as the Louvre and Getty that are privileged to house remnants of its extraordinary creative brilliance. The J. Paul Getty Museum is deeply indebted to the Louvre whose generosity in lending so many outstanding works made this exhibition possible and especially to Marielle Pic head of the Louvre’s Depart- ment of Near Eastern Antiquities and Ariane Thomas keeper of the Mesopotamia collections curator of the Lens exhibition and co-curator (with Timothy Potts) of the Los Angeles presentation. We also thank the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York: the Mus?e Auguste Grasset Varzy and the Biblioth?que Nationale de France Paris for additional loans. (MP)
