About the book >.>.> When I first came across Ellen Surrey’s delightful illustration of Peggy Moffitt it was love at first sight. The connection was twofold. First Ellen Surrey is an incredibly talented young illustrator who is a recent graduate of the renowned Art Center College of Design which coincidentally is also my alma mater and a place I called home in the twenty years I taught there. Secondly Peggy Moffitt is not only one of the most iconic fashion models of the mid-twentieth century but also a dear family friend. Her late husband the celebrated photographer William Claxton was my husband Steve Crist’s close friend and mentor. In fact one of our favorite vintage photographs of Peggy by Bill hangs in our home. During the 1960s Peggy Moffitt caused a sensation as the model and muse for Rudi Gernreich’s bold and graphic clothing designs perhaps none more so than the monokini the topless swimsuit she so elegant- ly modeled. Peggy’s background in dance gave a fluidity to her movements that was captured on film by William Claxton. Together they created what is considered the first fashion video Basic Black which is now in the permanent collection at MoMA in New York. Coupled with her Kabuki-style makeup she created herself and her geometric Vidal Sassoon haircut. Peggy invented a look all her own. (MP)
