About the book >.>.> The medieval village of Middlesbrough had dwindled to a single farmstead by the beginning of the 19th century. It was re-born just 150 years ago; the first house in the new town of Middlesbrough having been built in April 1830. It is not possible in a publication of this size to deal fully with all aspects of the history and development of Middlesbrough but it is hoped that the various maps and plans selected for reproduction in the present album together with the notes which follow will illustrate the most interesting aspects of the transition of Middlesbrough and its suburbs Acklam Ayresome Linthorpe Newport Marton Ormesby and Tollesby from a group of ancient settlements into one of the most important industrial towns in the United Kingdom. In 1976 the Cleveland & Teesside Local History Society in conjunction with the Cleveland County Libraries published “The River Tees – Two Centuries of Change” – an album of plans with a text illustrating the development of the River Tees Estuary into a major port. Because they have been dealt with in this earlier publication the Middles- brough Docks and the adjacent riverside and the Transporter and Newport Bridges are only briefly mentioned in the present publication. In 1968 Middlesbrough was absorbed into the short-lived Teesside County Borough and our story stops short in that year; no attempt has been made to illustrate the current rebuilding of Middlesbrough’s town centre or the new housing estates now being developed to the south of the town. For more detailed information readers are referred to the Bibliography. (LL)
