About the book >.>.> It is also well known for its contrasting scenery. The rugged cliffs of the north and west coasts facing the Bristol Channel and Atlantic Ocean provide some of the most magnificent coastal scenery in the British Isles. Much of the southern aspect is more gentle with hills rolling down to the English Channel but in places cliff scenery on the south coast can be both specta cular and colourful. Headlands of more resistant rocks project from a coast indented by drowned river mouths notably those of the Tamar at Plymouth and the Fal a Falmouth (fig. 3). East Devon with its hills and valleys of Cretaceous rocks and the red soils derived from the rocks of the Permian and Triassic has a character that com trasts with the Devonian and Carboniferous pasture land of mid-Devon and Cornwall and with the Devonian sand stone moorland of Exmoor further north. The topography of the peninsula is dominated b rounded masses of granite. topped by characteristic rugged grey tors and surrounding rock debris. standin out above moorland or rough pasture (fig. 4). Early travellers described the region as mountainous considerable overstatement. (SP)
