About the book >.>.> Nicola Avancini was born in 1612 in the Archdiocese of Trent which was then part of the Austrian Tyrol. His name is Italian but he entered the Austrian Jesuit novitiate at Gratz in Styria at the age of 15. He died aged 74 in Rome as assistant for the German provinces of the Society having been Rector of several colleges in Austria Provincial of the Austrian Province and Visitor of Bohemia. He wrote much including plays based on Saints’ lives but it is these points for meditation that have last-ed the longest written about 1666 perhaps primarily for those entering the Society. No translation of the complete text seems hitherto to have appeared in English; the Latin can be obtained through English booksellers or direct from “Domus Editorialis Ma-rietti” Taurini-Romae Italy where it passed its 16th edition in 1948 showing the extent to which it is still in demand. His arrangement of the meditations touches the Litur-gical year in broad outline and in order to bring it closer a calendar of the Gospels for the Sundays and chief Feast-days of the year is given at the end of the book. It should be mentioned that in England there is still a large number of second-hand copies of the Latin edition “adapted by an unknown presbyter for the use of An-glican clergy” the work of an early Tractarian but it must not be confused with the original text for though at first sight it seems to be almost the same words have been altered in a great number of places while a few chapters have been omitted and new ones written ins stead.
