About the book >.>.> These engines are primarily designed for heavy freight traffic and are fitted for working rolling stock equipped with either Westinghouse Air or Vacuum Brake Systems. Either system can be isolated by means of stop valves in the cab. Steam brakes are provided on the engine and tender and can be operated automatically with the Westinghouse or Vacuum brake systems or independently when working light or with loose coupled stock. Hand brake is provided on tender. The following is a brief description of the locomotive giving some of its particular features together with certain information which should be found useful in its maintenance and repair. Boiler The boiler shell is of mild steel consisting of a parallel barrel made in three rings with steam dome and injector top feed. The firebox is of the round top type. The 1st barrel ring has an inside diameter of 51 52″ the 2nd an inside diameter of 51 7″ and the 3rd an inside diameter of 51 81″ The smokebox tubeplate is of the drum type and the distance between the tube- plates is 151 8″. The inner-firebox is of Colvilles ‘Double Crown” Brand Steel with welded joints and is extended forward to form a combustion chamber. Three arch tubes 3″ outside diameter x 7 S.W.G. are provided in the firebox.
