About the book >.>.> THE THE Preface to this book can be a very short and simple thing. I have thought the time ripe for a book on ‘Musical Appecia- tion’ of a different type from any yet issued-one that should not lay down any one personal system or method but should discuss the subject in a comprehensive and ample way tracing the his- tory of the ‘Appreciation’ idea answering the chief objections that have been advanced setting out the broad underlying philo- sophy of ‘Appreciation’ teaching debating a large number of detailed points of principle and procedure and recording the experiences and experiments of practical teachers in a great variety of schools and to conclude attempting a Glossary of all the technical terms that an ‘Appreciation’ teacher or pupil can need to know. That I have been helped by many good friends (known and unknown to me) will be realized as the book is read. In par- ticular I thank Mr. W. McNaught B.A. who kindly read the book in typescript. I have hopes that my compilation may from the large scope it attempts be found useful not only in Britain and the British Empire but also in the United States. I am well aware that in some respects American thought and practice on this subject have run ahead of British but on the other hand a volume wherein so large a body of opinion and experience is collected should be found to contain something helpful to all. I call atten- tion to the Analytical Index at the end which it is hoped adds some reference value to whatever reading value the book may possess. (SP)
