About the book >.>.> It was very unsporting of Gerald Durrell to pre-empt the title my mother really needed for this book My Family and Other Animals. She thought of using it anyway and the heck with the lawyers- but then decided that wouldn’t be fair to all the millions of people who would buy Durrell’s book under the impression that they were getting this one… The Somerset that Mother remembers already seems to belong to another world-a world where motor-cars and telephones were rare novelties cinema and radio still undreamed of. In many respects the way of life on the farms and estates had not changed for centuries; there may still be some who look back on it with nostalgia. For the few per cent who had wealth position and continuous good health that vanished age was indeed a golden one: but I do not think that the average man if he could be miraculously transported back to the last days of the Victorian era would care to stay after he had felt the first twinge of tooth-ache. Yet despite all the changes much of the West of England is still largely unspoilt and long may it remain so. The rising interest in the countryside in animals and in ecology may help to preserve what is best in the past; we should not grieve for the rest but reading about it will give us a better historical perspective-and a better appreciation of our own age.
