About the book >.>.> A semiotic interpretation is a critical one-it wants to know how it is pos- sible for the text to say what it does (Eco 1990: 54-5). One could as Eco does call the first type of interpretation ‘na?ve’ but this would be to introduce an unnecessary hierarchy; after all it is often quite enough to figure out what a text says (Trespassers will be fined’) and leave it at that. It is also possible to be suspicious of critical interpretations as running the risk of overinterpretation that is seeing things that are not there or as pre-empting the possibility of enjoying a text as it is. Eco is wary of overinterpretations but points out that a critical reader whilst seeking to understand how a text is made can still enjoy it as text and perhaps to enjoy it even more. Whichever way one looks at it. it seems clear that researchers ought to be semiotic readers and in the media-dominated societies of today it would be good if there were more critical readers in general.
