About the book >.>.> In December 2000 we embarked on a mission to acquire a piece of work by Alice Kettle for the collections at Bankfield. Having actively purchased and commissioned a series of works by contemporary artists over a period of eleven years. we were conscious that the absence of any example of Alice’s work represented a significant omission within the existing collection of textiles. We achieved our initial goal purchasing Trees 2 with support from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund. At the same time we set ourselves another goal: inviting Alice to exhibit a body of work at Bankfield at some future date. Mythscapes is the result of that invitation and the culmination of over two years of planning and making From the early days of the project Alice has always viewed it as an opportunity to stretch herself as an artist and maker and in so doing to define her practice for the next decade. This she has done through the creation of a major body of new work exploring some of the universal themes raised in Homer’s Odyssey. (LL)
