About the book >.>.> The present New York Central System is com- posed of literally hundreds of smaller independent railroads. This book conveniently divides the System into chapters: New York Central & Hudson River; Boston & Albany; Lake Shore & Michigan Southern; Cleveland Cincinnati St. Louis & Chicago (Big Four); Michigan Central; Toledo & Ohio Central; and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. These were the seven major railroads forged together by the Vanderbilt dynasty to form what is now the mighty New York Central System. Young America was an exciting turbulent place with the center of culture and social life being New York City. Commodore Vanderbilt controlled the city’s direct rail routes during these years and so everything his railroad did received due pub- licity. SPEED was the craze and the New York Central had the men and the machines to deliver what the public wanted. Deliver it did with trains and locomotives that were colorful and fast. The men rook immense pride in their jobs appreciating the social position that was associated with running the Vanderbilt Road.” This then is the story of their trains their railroad and most important of all THEIR LOCOMOTIVES.
