About the book >.>.> The tapestries each approximately twenty feet wide were based on the recently completed county surveys of Christopher Saxton adding much detail to his carefully plotted towns villages hills and rivers to create a picture of the countryside both natural and man-made. To this in various ways and at various points on the tapestry further information was added descriptive historical and personal so that the tapestries share decorative elements in each of the four corners. The broad borders succeeded in combining cartographic conventions with tapestry fashion satisfying both aesthetic and educational interests. The set was obviously conceived designed and woven as a single project which would both embellish the house and educate and entertain the viewers. The tapestries have been damaged by the passage of time by moths and by men. Only one tapestry from the Elizabethan scheme now surrounded by a seventeenth-century border is still complete on display in the county it depicts at Warwickshire Museum. Four unequally sized sections survive from Gloucestershire representing about a quarter of the original. Three belong to the Bodleian Library University of Oxford which also owns the two other Elizabethan tapestries Worcestershire and the greater part of Oxfordshire the latter already damaged when presented by Richard Gough a topographer and antiquary in 1809. Its missing sections are now in the E Victoria and Albert Museum London. The tapestries are pictured here reunited electronically. (LL)
