About the book >.>.> In Scandinavia around the turn of the century both established order and artistic tradition were challenged as a proliferation of talented artists sought to express new ideas against a backdrop of contention both aesthetic and poli- tical. It was a ‘golden age’ for Nordic art; yet with the exception of Edvard Munch remarkably little attention has been focused on the richness and diver- sity of the paintings made in Scandina- via during these years. In this lavishly illustrated book Kirk Varnedoe offers a fascinating insight into the forces binding together the art of the Nordic nations as a separate mo- vement and sets Scandinavian trends within the broader context of Europ- ean developments. Equally important- ly however he looks at the local histor- ical influences political cultural and geographical which also helped to mould the distinctive and haunting character of Scandinavian art in this pe- riod. Featuring works by a wide cross-sec- tion of the most notable Nordic artists Northern Light through the close examination of individual paintings highlights both European influences and the uniquely Nordic perspectives of the time – the complex interaction of Symbolism and Realism and the often mystic power of the natural world on these painters. It is conclusive evidence that early modern Scandinavian art has for too long been marginalised and overshadowed by less original Europe- an work and a handsome contribution towards righting the imbalance.
