About the book >.>.> But the medieval castle is not lost beyond recovery. Even before Newcastle built his mansion antiquaries had begun to write about the medieval castle and there has been a steady stream of description and speculation. To put them on an accurate basis called for a programme of research and excavation. That programme was funded by the Nottingham Civic Society and carried out in 1976-84 by the Trent Valley Archaeological Research Committee now the Trent & Peak Archaeological Trust. Upstanding medieval remains were uncovered and can now be seen by the public. Excavation is a destructive process and the archaeologist is morally obliged to get his results into print so that they are in a way preserved and made known. Mr Christopher Drage. who directed the excavations is the author of this account of the castle. Instead of presenting the results as a dry-as-dust report port which would appeal only to other archaeologists the details of the excavations and the finds are set out and the results are woven into a description of the buildings and the history of the medieval castle as they are known from medieval documents as well as excavation so that the whole forms a chronicle of the castle. The Thoroton Society is delighted to co-operate in publishing the chronicle. (LL)
