About the book >.>.> ANDRE DE DIENES has been a professional photographer since 1935 and has taken more than thirty thousand photographs of the female nude. He lives in Hollywood California. This book describes his life his work and the day-to-day problems he encounters in the course of that work. It is profusely illustrated with his own photographs which he describes as the distilled effort of countless hours of labour. All potential and active photographers of the nude will welcome the generous advice he offers and the many helpful hints he provides. Non-photographers also will enjoy the lively and very readable text. De Dienes does not photograph nudes just for the sake of it. He aims to achieve a wide variety of photographs of different girls which depict them beautifully in varied poses under all kinds of normal and artificial light. He says Models are simply tools which permit me to express the beauty of the female form as it appears to me. Yet his imagination also welcomes the challenge of bringing out the latent beauty in imperfection or apparent ugliness. Most girls are not as beautiful as they appear in their photographs and it takes hard work and skill to compensate for their inadequacies. The author deals with the problems of finding a good model and when there are none available. of selecting one who is very willing to pose and thus ensure a good day’s experimental photography. He advises on how to instruct her and on how to select a location which suits her personality. Whatever her aptitude the individual’s outstanding qualities must be brought out and emphasised. Nude photography demands a deep appreciation of light and de Dienes pays special attention to the art of choosing and if necessary augmenting the light for each shot. In contrast to natural poses the body may be depicted as sculpture-contrived poses are sculpture in flesh and therefore deliberately unnatural. (LL)
