About the book >.>.> This second volume of ‘On Parallel Lines’ takes another dip into the archives and hopefully satisfies the hundreds of requests we have had for ‘more of the same. It has given us the opportunity to publish shots that had to be omitted from Volume 1 on grounds of space (ie: the lack of it) and expand the coverage of prime steam locations such as Manchester Victoria and Exchange. But we’ve gone a little further covering that period which I refer to as “the wilderness years” between late 1968 and 1973 when the only thing steaming on the main line was a solitary A3 in LNER green livery – and even that small respite lasted only until September 1969 when Flying Scotsman was shipped to America to begin its ultimately abortive ‘trade mission’. Suffering serious withdrawal symptoms we turned our sights to far-distant foreign lands (well OK- just 26 miles in fact to the other side of the English Channel) where the spirit of steam was far from dead. France was still remarkably vibrant with steam traction and only a short ferry ride away. Suddenly instead of ‘Black 5s’ and 8Fs it was the impressive and photogenic American and Canadian-built Class 141Rs which filled our viewfinders – they and the handful of French-built loco types which still remained.
