About the book >.>.> Like the seventh-century Anglo-Saxon monk-poet from Whitby Caedmon his poetic gift was according to the Synaxarion the result of a miracle. The Virgin Mother of God appeared to him in a dream on Christmas Eve and gave him a scroll to swallow; next morning Romanos woke up and praising God went straight to the church and chanted from the pulpit the most cel- ebrated of his kontakia one on the Nativity the first to be translated in this volume. What little we know of his life is related by Fr Ephrem in his intro- duction (see pp. xxiii-xxxii): although originally from Syria Romanos spent most of his life in Constantinople and was there dur- ing the dramatic events of the reign of the Emperor Justinian (527-65) including the Nika riot of 532 in which much of Constantinople was destroyed and the consequent reconstruction including the rebuilding of the Great Church of the Holy Wisdom (Haghia Sophia) still standing today.
