About the book >.>.> I have tried to relate the musical activity which then existed in Dublin’s theatres to the general conditions of life in the capital during the period. Italian opera has always been prominent with frequent presentation of works which are English either in origin or translation and more rarely French or German opera. Ballad or comic opera and its modern counterpart musical comedy has had continuous popu-larity. In two centuries the mixture has changed little. I have frequently quoted contemporary writers verbatim even though original observations can be biassed or inaccurate for this is primarily a source book. I wish to acknowledge my debt to a number of writers whose work gave me a fuller understanding of the background of my subject. They are Professor William Smith Clark Professor Esther K. Sheldon Dr. La Tourette Stockwell and that distinguished yet now virtually forgotten Irish theatrical historian the late Dr. William J. Lawrence. One author whom I would like to mention separately is the late W. H. Grattan Flood. It has become fashionable of late in discussions on Irish music to introduce Dr Grattan Flood as a sort of musical leprechaun from the early part of the century. As one who actually knew him perhaps I may be permitted to alter this impression. (MP)
